Megawheels S1
Stats
Price - £150 to £180
Top Speed - 14mph
Range - 5-8 miles
The Megawheels S1 is a great entry level electric scooter. For the price range it sits in, you won't get much better. The build is of a good quality and it is easy to pick up and get started.
To get moving on the S1 you have a trigger type accelerator which is very easy to use. This trigger system is also replicated for the brake which doesn't work quite as well. The brake starts working quite suddenly from nothing. The solid wheels require no maintenance, although you will feel the curbs a little more.
The S1 is very light for an electric scooter at just over 8kg which makes it easy to carry around compared with some of the more powerful scooters. The top speed is 14mph, but this is only achievable for a lighter person unless you're going down a steep hill. That said, it allows for a decent speed for most adults. It would be better to have a little extra power though for a bigger adult.
The battery is one of the weaknesses for the S1. It's stated range is 5-8 miles, but in our testing we haven't got it to go much further than 3 miles. If you are looking for an electric scooter to take on a longer journey this one won't be for you, but for a short trip it works. There is a battery indicator which is on the side of the footplate which doesn't make it easy to see whilst riding, but the blue lights make it obvious how much juice is left.
The fold mechanism is very good. Once you master the technique it can be done within a couple of seconds. Getting the handlebar height right takes slightly longer, but you can take the S1 from folded to riding very quickly.
Overall this is a great scooter for a teenager or light adult, but for the average adult you will likely be looking for a little more power. For the price though you won't find much better than this.
